Here is What Small Businesses Should Know Before Taking Payments Online.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve decided to make a push into online retail too, then figuring out how best to take online\u00a0payments\u00a0will likely be a big piece of the puzzle.<\/p>\n<p>Yes,\u00a0taking a brick-and-mortar store online\u00a0can help you reach more customers, but you definitely won\u2019t be without lots of competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRetail sales are up across the board in 2022, with online sales increasing at a rate that\u2019s about 60 percent higher than in-store sales growth,\u201d said Kate Hoots, a payment processing specialist at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merchantmaverick.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merchant Maverick<\/a>. \u201cUnfortunately, as online selling soars, so does the number of platforms where customers can buy goods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The good news is it\u2019s now much easier for small businesses to begin selling products online than it was just a few years ago thanks to simpler platforms,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightspeedhq.com\/blog\/smb-payment-processing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improved payment processing<\/a>, and lower operating costs.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section1\">1. Top eCommerce platforms can help you start<\/h2>\n<p>Where before small businesses had to invest heavily in expensive websites and complex development, they can now set up shop quickly and simply with the help of eCommerce platforms and marketplaces.<\/p>\n<p>These eCommerce platforms are \u201cusually compatible with multiple channels, including social media,\u201d said Volodymyr Shchegel, VP of engineering at cybersecurity company <a href=\"https:\/\/clario.co\/\">Clario<\/a>. \u201cBy processing all of your credit card transactions through a single eCommerce platform provider, all transactions will be visible on a single dashboard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section2\">2. Payment gateways let you accept credit cards<\/h2>\n<p>Your business will need a payment gateway to accept credit cards and other online payments.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">A gateway is a secure web application that captures and transfers payment data from the shopper to the bank that issued their credit card.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">These payment gateways usually connect several acquiring banks and payment methods within one system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cNobody expects to get by with a payment gateway that allows customers to pay with just cards anymore,\u201d said Hoots, of Merchant Maverick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCustomers don\u2019t want to pull out a card to make online purchases. Payment options that securely store customers\u2019 payment and shipping information, like Shop Pay, or online stores powered by Shopify, can not just increase your sales but also your average order size (AOV).\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section3\">3. Payment gateways will charge you transaction fees<\/h2>\n<p>Different gateways will charge you different fees, based on your sales volume.<\/p>\n<p>Henry Abenaim, CEO of loan management solution\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundingo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fundingo<\/a>, recommends choosing a payment gateway that is secure and relatively inexpensive. \u201cGateways incur fees based on location, payment method, and transactions per month. A business can observe its customers\u2019 payment habits and determine a payment gateway based on those habits,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3>Know your transaction volume<\/h3>\n<p>Gates Little, CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/altline.sobanco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">altLINE Sobanco<\/a>, said small businesses need to carefully assess providers\u2019 claims before signing up. \u201cIf a service offers a lower fee, but only after the first $100,000 of business, you need to evaluate if your SMB regularly reaches that threshold. If not, you may want to look at a different service,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3>Assess fees against customer service<\/h3>\n<p>Payment processing fees may be worrisome, but it\u2019s essential to dig deep during your research. Sometimes rates may seem lower than competitors, but they could come with hidden fees that aren\u2019t clear until after you\u2019ve signed on. Some gateway providers may also cut corners with customer service to be able to offer you lower fees.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section4\">4. Shoppers want a range of online payment options<\/h2>\n<p>Customers want to pay and get on their way as quickly as possible. For this reason, you need to accept their favorite payment methods. That means cash, credit and debit cards, and digital wallets like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.<\/p>\n<p>Adding buy now, pay later (BNPL) methods like Affirm or Sezzle could make it easy for customers to buy, according to Hoots. She said small businesses might pay a higher percentage in processing fees for BNPL transactions.<\/p>\n<p>There is no harm in letting customers know your payment method preferences too, according to Ruben Gamez, founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.signwell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SignWell<\/a>, an e-signature app. \u201cIf you prefer them to pay by debit, add a note at checkout. Help is at hand to keep customer data safe<\/h2>\n<p>Online payments come with a little bit of risk. Unfortunately, retail fraud and card theft remain a blight on hard-working small businesses every year.<\/p>\n<p>You can avoid fraud\u2014and decrease your gateway fees\u2014by using an address verification service and other anti-fraud protections, according to Fernando Lopez, marketing director at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/getcircuit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Circuit<\/a>, which provides software for deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGateways charge more to\u00a0high-risk merchants, so moving your business into the low-risk territory can significantly decrease your fees,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">But the good news is card issuers, payment processors, and banks continue to bolster their defenses.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">You can check whether potential providers meet the highest security standards by asking them if they follow the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">These standards ensure payment providers use the latest technology to verify shopper identities and protect their private data from cyber fraudsters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"section6\">6. Avoid sending shoppers off your site with \u2018integrated payments\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The more you explore taking online payments for your business, the more likely you are to come across something called \u2018integrated payments.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Integrated payments allow small businesses to offer the same payment methods across their brick-and-mortar store and online shop and avoid having to manually key in payment amounts.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">They help shoppers check out much more quickly on your website because they no longer have to visit a third-party site or app to complete their payment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Reduce abandoned carts<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAs an online business seller, my number one tip is to avoid redirecting your customers to another site to complete their purchase,\u201d said Jason Vishnefske, ma\u00eetre chocolatier and founder of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.santabarbarachocolate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santa Barbara Chocolate Company<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis creates an unnecessary barrier that can lead to abandoned carts and frustrated customers. If you\u2019re selling on multiple online platforms, make sure that each one has a seamless checkout process that doesn\u2019t require customers to leave the site to complete their purchase.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Avoid costly outages<\/h3>\n<p>Worse still, third-party payment sites can also wholly limit your ability to accept online payments if something goes wrong. Evan McCarthy, the owner of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingsmiles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sporting Smiles<\/a>, had this very experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears ago we were using a [third party] for our credit card payments, and there was a known exploit that hackers were using just to verify credit cards were active. They froze our ability to take payments, and our company was basically shut down while the [third party] worked to fix this issue,\u201d said McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter that experience, I now have two credit card payment methods available. I only have one active, but if something happens with our current processor, I could switch it over and have the website back up and able to take payments in minutes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, you can choose to have your\u00a0integrated or non-integrated payment processing with your eCommerce platform.
