Here Now\u2019s the Time to Take Credit Card Payments.<\/p>\n<p>Retailers, consultants, eCommerce stores, and marketplace businesses have told Lightspeed that credit card payments are proving central to their business stability today.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gb-background-color-grey shortcode-cta gb-flex gb-flex--center-horizontal gb-flex--center-vertical\"><\/div>\n<h2>Fast facts about consumers and credit cards<\/h2>\n<p>This is what findings from a 2022\u00a0Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco study\u00a0of consumer payments show:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">American consumers used credit cards and debit cards for 57 percent of total payments in 2021, up from 54 percent in 2019.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Consumers younger than 45 used cash for less than 20 percent of payments, and older consumers for more than 20 percent.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Cash use\u00a0<i>decreased<\/i>, and credit card use\u00a0<i>increased<\/i>\u00a0for consumers across all household income levels throughout the pandemic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s a quick insight into how consumers use credit cards. Now, let\u2019s hear what business owners and leaders say.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section1\">1. You could gain shoppers and sales<\/h2>\n<p>Leverage RX, a financial services marketplace for American healthcare workers, accepts both card and cash payments from its customers.<\/p>\n<p><b>Greater sales<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we first offered credit card payments, we saw a significant increase in our sales. Most of our customers were more inclined to use the card payment system,\u201d said CRO Rhett Stubbendeck. \u201cI have noticed cash payment is mostly only used by our much older clients, i.e., baby boomers, who may find using credit cards to be complex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Loyalty and rewards\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Other reasons customers prefer to pay by card include the ability to easily track their spending and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. \u201cCredit cards also offer rewards and loyalty points, a major incentive for customers to use them,\u201d according to Ty Wilson, co-founder of\u00a0CustomMade, which designs and makes custom engagement rings. \u201cThey will likely shop at a store that offers discounts or points for using their cards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Impulse purchases<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Jason Vishnefske, president of the\u00a0Santa Barbara Chocolate Company, has found credit cards are a valuable way to boost impulse purchases too. \u201cWhen you\u2019re paying with a credit card, you don\u2019t physically see the money leaving your hand, so you\u2019re less likely to second-guess your purchase. For businesses, this means increased profits, which is always a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section2\">2. Cash is falling out of favor<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cCredit cards are the backbone of our revenue stream. We receive a significant chunk of our revenue from credit cards,\u201d said Jason Farr, owner of\u00a0Aviara Pavers, a California-based design and outdoor living company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the easiest ways to make payments, especially at\u00a0POS terminals. Virtual cards and crypto are still relatively new, and people are still wary of them. So credit cards are still ahead in the payment options race,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Dwindling role of cash<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Still, some businesses stop accepting credit cards from their customers because of the charges attached, according to Mark Stewart, a certified public accountant (CPA) at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stepbystepbusiness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Step By Step Business<\/a>. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Processing fees<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Merchant service fees<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Monthly statement charges<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">And even compliance fees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIf a business chooses cash-only payment, they are likely to experience a drop in sales because [most] Americans use a credit card for their day-to-day transactions. You can try to improve your sales by offering incentives for upfront payment while you easily transition into a non-credit card payment rule,\u201d said Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>But if you don\u2019t accept credit cards, you are automatically behind your competition, according to Gates Little of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/altline.sobanco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AltLine Sobanco<\/a>. \u201cYou are creating a friction point (an inconvenience) for potential customers that may make them turn to your competitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Growing reliance on credit\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In tough economic times, business buyers may be more reliant on using credit to fund important purchases for much-needed goods and services. For\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/matt-jackson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt Jackson<\/a>, an eCommerce consultant, the challenging economy is affecting how customers want to pay for services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlready I\u2019m being asked by some clients whether they can pay by card and I think this trend will grow as the cost-of-living crisis bites. You can limit payment disputes<\/h2>\n<p>For\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pepper-home.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pepper Home<\/a>\u00a0co-founder Erin Banta, credit card payments are also a way to avoid bothersome payment disputes. \u201cNo other form of payment, ACH and checks included, offer the quality of protection that credit card payments do,\u201d said Banta, whose company provides customer decor products.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because the processor can determine without any doubt whether a\u00a0credit card transaction\u00a0was authorized correctly, according to Banta. \u201cSave your company from potential grief and lost time over customer disputes by accepting credit cards. Your bottom line will thank you as well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section4\">4. You might get more regular cash flow<\/h2>\n<p>As a small business that works with large corporations, Toronto-based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.robertlowdon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Lowdon Photography<\/a>\u00a0is often paid via cheque and sometimes Net-30.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we accept credit cards we are able to\u00a0receive payment [almost] immediately, which helps with cash flow and accounting. Our invoicing system allows clients to pay through it, so we don\u2019t have to process anything physically,\u201d said Megan Lowdon, the company\u2019s partner and director of operations.<\/p>\n<p><b>International customers<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Lowdon believes credit card fees are a small price to pay for helping clients pay the way that works best for their accounting department. \u201cWe find around 20 percent of our clients use credit cards for payment, most commonly when we are hired internationally,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Quick payment processing<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Credit cards play a significant role in its cash flow and business model. \u201cWe have employees in many different countries,\u201d said Linda Shaffer, the company\u2019s chief people, and operations officer. \u201c[Because of this] we need to be able to process payments quickly and efficiently. Credit cards allow us to do this, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCredit card payments ensure that we have a consistent cash flow. This is because we can track our spending more easily, and we are not as reliant on other forms of payment, such as bank transfers, which can take longer to process,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section5\">5. You could save time on bookkeeping<\/h2>\n<p>Small businesses in particular often still rely on the manual processing of invoices and payment methods, which can be time-consuming and error-prone. Accepting credit cards can go some way to easing these burdens, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/antreas-koutis-b89822197\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antreas Koutis<\/a>, administrative manager at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/financer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financer<\/a>, a price comparison service.<\/p>\n<p><b>Less time chasing payment details<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCredit card integration may allow businesses to save time by automatically matching invoices with payments, and may also reduce chances of human error,\u201d he said. \u201cThis will free up staff to focus on other tasks and will ultimately help businesses run more smoothly and efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stubbendeck has found this to be true at Leverage RX too. \u201cCredit card payments have eliminated all billing, invoice collection, and check hassles for my business.
