Here is what carbon offsets are and how businesses may employ them to achieve their sustainability goals.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-a-carbon-offset\">What is a carbon offset?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/carbon-offset\">Carbon offsets<\/a>\u00a0are activities that make up for the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses. These emissions are made up by reducing the same emissions elsewhere. Here are a few forms they could take:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reforestation projects<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onetreeplanted.org\/pages\/reforestation\">Reforestation projects<\/a> focus on rebuilding landscapes destroyed by deforestation. These areas could have been affected by natural disturbances such as wildfire or drought, as well as unnatural ones like logging or mining. Planting trees combat soil erosion, air pollutants, and carbon sequestration amongst other things.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carbon-storing agricultural practices<\/strong>: These programs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcs.usda.gov\/Internet\/FSE_DOCUMENTS\/nrcs141p2_002437.pdf\">include practices such as<\/a>\u00a0crop diversity through rotations and cover crops, feed management, conservation tillage, and efficient nutrient management. Some of these programs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clear.ucdavis.edu\/explainers\/what-carbon-sequestration\">will also employ technological approaches to removing and storing carbon<\/a>, such as using carbon dioxide as a raw material to produce graphene, direct air capture, and engineered molecules.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Waste and landfill management<\/strong>: Waste management\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wasteadvantagemag.com\/business-case-carbon-offsets-waste-diversion-waste-digestion-composting\/\">commonly employed by farmers<\/a>\u00a0includes methane reduction by replacing open manure lagoons with anaerobic digesters to capture and destroy that methane. Some of these are voluntary programs while others are compliance programs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong>American Carbon Registry (ACR)<\/strong>: This nonprofit organization was founded in 1996 as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/americancarbonregistry.org\/\">first private voluntary offset program in the world<\/a>. It operates in global voluntary and regulated carbon markets.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Climate Action Reserve (CAR)<\/strong>: This is a national offset program focused on greenhouse gas emissions reduction. It is an approved\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateactionreserve.org\/how\/california-compliance-projects\/\">Offset Project Registry<\/a>, which authorizes it to provide services under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.arb.ca.gov\/our-work\/programs\/compliance-offset-program\">California\u2019s Cap-and-Trade Program\u2019s Compliance Offset Protocols<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)<\/strong>: The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climateleadership\/ghg-reduction-programs-strategies\">EPA offers programs<\/a>\u00a0that support energy efficiency, renewable energy, supply chain, waste reduction and diversion, methane emission reduction, and more. They also have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2017-01\/documents\/guide_to_greenhouse_gas_management_for_small_business_low_emitters.pdf\">guide targeted toward small businesses and other low emitters<\/a>\u00a0who would like to lower their greenhouse gas emissions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Verra\u2019s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS)<\/strong>: The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/verra.org\/project\/vcs-program\/\">VCS program<\/a>\u00a0has over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/registry.verra.org\/#\/home\">1,813 certified projects<\/a>\u00a0that have collectively reduced or removed 957 million tonnes of carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere. Projects developed under this program follow an assessment process in order to be verified. This includes an independent audit and quantified accounting for greenhouse gas emissions reduction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The options above are only a few of the many carbon offset programs available.
