That\u2019s why you break it up into steps and focus on getting the best of your store up first, and keep building as you go.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to do to launch your online store.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Register a domain<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your\u00a0<i>domain\u00a0<\/i>is the web address shoppers will use to access your site. There are three parts to a domain name:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The subdomain:<\/b>\u00a0the\u00a0<i>www.\u00a0<\/i>(or equivalent\u2014some addresses use the <i>shop.<\/i>, for example) at the beginning of a URL.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The root domain:<\/b>\u00a0the middle of the URL\u2014the site name. This will be the name of your business.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The top-level domain:\u00a0<\/b>the end of a URL. The most popular top-level domain is\u00a0<i>.com<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019ll get your root domain and top-level domain from a domain provider like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ca.godaddy.com\/\">GoDaddy<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.domain.com\/\">Domain.com<\/a>, and you\u2019ll pick your subdomain when you connect your domain to your eCom store provider.<\/p>\n<p>Domain providers tend to advertise domains for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpbeginner.com\/beginners-guide\/how-much-does-a-domain-name-really-cost-expert-answer\/\">$9 to $14.99<\/a>\u00a0a year, but the initial purchase price can increase if you\u2019re after a premium domain.<\/p>\n<p>Premium domains are .com domains that are highly in demand and easy to remember, and their visibility\u2014.com is the most popular top-level domain, and so might be the one your shoppers are looking for\u2014makes them more desirable.<\/p>\n<p>Not all .com domains are premium domains, but if the .com name you want for your store has been flagged as a premium domain and is prohibitively expensive, try looking for the same root domain with a different top-level domain, such as .store or .net.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pick a theme (and customize it)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You can code your theme from scratch, sure. Or you can pay someone to do it for you. But starting an online store with a pre-made, customizable theme is a much more affordable and time-efficient way to get going.<\/p>\n<p>Your theme is the first impression a potential shopper has when they land on your page. To impress them, it should:<b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Be mobile responsive<\/b>: this means it should have a mobile theme built-in, one that it automatically switches to when shoppers are browsing on a mobile device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Be easy to navigate:\u00a0<\/b>shoppers should be able to locate your categories and their shopping cart at a glance. If they\u2019re confused, they\u2019ll leave.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Load quickly:\u00a0<\/b>website speed is key to keeping browsers around long enough to become shoppers. How fast does a site need to be? Think seconds\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/unbounce.com\/page-speed-report\/\">36% of visitors<\/a>\u00a0will leave your site if it takes more than 3 seconds to load.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Focus on the visuals.\u00a0<\/b>Bold, visual-focused design catches eyes. A theme that puts images front-and-center will help you communicate your brand without relying on a lot of text shoppers might scroll past.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you customize your theme, be sure to keep your business\u2019 identity in mind.
